Claude for Excel Says “No Longer Available” or Shows a 404?

Stop retrying an old installation link. Remove the stale add-in, then install the current Claude for Microsoft 365 suite for Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Excel and Microsoft 365 About 5–10 minutes Managed device: use another device

The quickest fix

Use the current Microsoft Marketplace listing.

Install “Claude for Microsoft 365”

Anthropic’s current individual installation instructions point to one suite that covers Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Open the current Microsoft Marketplace listing
EXPECTED RESULT
The listing should say “Claude for Microsoft 365”. Click Get it now, then open Excel and activate Claude from the Add-ins menu.

What changed

Why an older Excel-only link may fail.

Anthropic now directs individual users to the unified Claude for Microsoft 365 listing, which includes Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word. An older saved link or installed Excel-only entry may show “No longer available”, a 404 or an installation error for some accounts or Microsoft 365 organisations.

IMPORTANT
The older public listing has not disappeared everywhere. It may still be visible in Microsoft Marketplace, so an unavailable message can also be caused by your organisation’s Store policy, account context or Excel version. Try the current unified listing. If a work or school policy blocks it, use another compatible device.

Check compatibility first

Claude also requires a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise.

Supported by Anthropic

  • Excel on the web
  • Excel on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription, build 16.0.13127.20296 or later
  • Excel on Mac version 16.46 or later, build 21011600 or later
  • Excel on iPad version 2.51 or later

Do not rely on the desktop add-in

  • Excel 2016 or 2019 perpetual / volume licence
  • Older Microsoft 365 builds below Anthropic’s supported threshold
  • Excel on Android
  • Excel 2021 perpetual, which Anthropic does not list as a supported Windows build
NOT SURE?
On Windows, open Excel and go to File → Account. Under Product Information, check whether it says Microsoft 365 and note the build number under About Excel.

Remove the old Excel add-in

Clear the stale entry before installing the current suite.
  1. Open Excel, then open your installed add-ins. On current Windows builds, go to Home → Add-ins. On some versions, use Insert → My Add-ins.
  2. Find “Claude by Anthropic for Excel”. If it is not listed, skip directly to Step 2 below.
  3. Open the add-in menu and select Remove. Click the … menu beside the old add-in, choose Remove, then confirm.
  4. Close and reopen Excel. This clears the old task pane and refreshes the add-in list.

Install Claude for Microsoft 365

Use the unified suite rather than an older saved link.
  1. Open the Add-ins store. In Excel, go to Home → Add-ins → Get Add-ins. Alternatively, use the direct Marketplace link below.
  2. Search for the exact name “Claude for Microsoft 365”. Confirm that the listing says it covers Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  3. Click Add or Get it now. Sign in to your Microsoft account and accept the requested permissions if prompted.
  4. Open the Claude sidebar in Excel. Return to Home → Add-ins, select Claude, then sign in with your paid Claude account.

If your organisation blocks the add-in

There is no participant-side fix for a managed-device policy.
STOP HERE
Use another device. Do not try to bypass your organisation’s Microsoft 365 policy, and do not depend on a policy change before the workshop.

Switch to a personal or otherwise unmanaged laptop that meets the compatibility requirements above. Install and sign in to Claude for Microsoft 365 on that device before arriving at the workshop.

If your Excel version is unsupported

You can still complete the workshop exercises.
  1. First try Excel on the web. If your Microsoft account includes web access, open the workbook in Excel on the web and install Claude for Microsoft 365 there.
  2. Otherwise, use Claude in your browser. Save or export the workbook as .xlsx or .csv, then upload it to the standard Claude web interface.
  3. Continue with the same data-analysis prompts. The workflow is less integrated than the Excel sidebar, but you can still analyse the data and follow the workshop demonstrations.
WORK DATA
Follow your organisation’s data-handling rules. Do not upload confidential or regulated workbooks to any external service unless your organisation permits it.

Troubleshooting

The most common remaining blockers.
I can see the Marketplace page, but “Get it now” is disabled

Sign in with the Microsoft account licensed for your copy of Excel. If a work or school account or managed-device policy still disables installation, use another compatible device.

The add-in installed, but it does not appear in Excel

Close all Excel windows, reopen Excel, then check Home → Add-ins. Confirm that you are signed into Excel with the same Microsoft account used for installation. If it remains unavailable on a work or school device, use another compatible device.

Excel says my version is incompatible

Check the compatibility section above. On Windows, Anthropic requires a supported Microsoft 365 subscription build. Use Excel on the web or the standard Claude web interface if your desktop version is unsupported.

I installed the suite but Claude asks me to upgrade

Claude for Excel requires a paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. Sign in to the add-in with the Claude account that holds that plan.
